Phase 2 of the new building was completed in the summer of 1986 with its official opening on the 4th of August. For many years the entry was from Komohana Street, a busy main road. Regular users of this entrance remember that this was a bit tricky as there were no turn lanes and it was often a case of pulling into, or more often across, quite fast moving traffic. Originally the County had asked for an exit lane to be built as a condition of planning permission, but the cost of this would have been significant so Terry Lee explained to the County Engineer that the entrance would be temporary and that the staff would not all arrive and leave at the same time, so traffic problems were not likely to arise. Terry remembers that the county officials were very helpful and that in the end the condition was waived since the long-term entry would be from the internal campus road. Of course, at the time there was no internal campus road, nor indeed an entry to the campus!
